Leroy proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II. He attained the rank of Tech Sargent in the Fighting 69th Infantry Division. One of his army buddies once commented “he was the smallest in stature, but we would have followed him anywhere.” His tour of duty took him to England, France, and Belgium. They captured Leipzig and continued to make the first link-up with Russian forces at Forgau on the Elbe River bringing the war to a close.
