Shirley Ruth (Ross) Yutzey

Shirley Ruth (Ross) Yutzey, 96, of Meyersdale passed peacefully on December 1, 2019 at the Meyersdale Medical Center.  Born on September 28, 1923 to the late Fred and Verda Ross of Shanksville, PA.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Walter Leroy Yutzey and son, Roger Alan Yutzey.  Also preceded in death by siblings Kenneth, Bob, Blair, Rhuel, Maxine (Barron), Dorothy (Rhoades), and Donald.  Survived by daughter-in-law Nancy Hengst of Fort Ashby, WV, and sons Greg (Kathy) Yutzey of DuBois, and Fred (Deb) Yutzey of Meyersdale; eight grandchildren: Roger (Lorie) Yutzey, Karen Yutzey, Jessica (Todd) Quinter, Amy (Zac) Snyder, Matthew (Laura) Yutzey, Randy (Heather) Yutzey, Eric (Nicole) Yutzey, and Jill (Kyle) Latsha; and fourteen great-grandchildren.  Also survived by sister-in-law and dear friend Carole (Yutzey) Klink.  After growing up on the family farm, Shirley graduated as member of the Class of 1942 of Shanksville-Stoneycreek High School.  Shirley and Leroy “went to housekeeping” at their home in Meyersdale after they married in 1944.  Shirley was a long-time member of the Meyersdale Church of the Brethren, where she participated in the Senior Choir, holiday canatas, the quilting group, the Women’s Fellowship, and the Greasy Spoon Plus II.  Music was important to Shirley and she and her husband often sang duets at area church services.  Shirley cooked “old-fashioned” meals for her family and many others through the years, and was especially known for her mashed potatoes and apple pie.  Shirley and Leroy spent much of their time visiting family and friends and would rarely be found at home.  She particularly enjoyed sitting on her front porch watching the birds, planting flowers, gardening, and spending time at a campfire.  Shirley was a kind and humorous soul, and would bring a smile to all those she would meet.  Family and friends will be received Wednesday, December 4, 2019 from 5:00-8:00 PM at M. Ray Leckemby Funeral Home in Meyersdale.  Visitation on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at 10:00 AM with service to follow at 11:00 AM at the Meyersdale Church of the Brethren with Pastor Dottie Grew officiating.
