Patricia Ann Houston Stanton, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 28, 2022, with Elvis’s Love Me Tender playing her out. Love me tender, love me long. Take me to your heart. For it’s there that I belong and we’ll never part.
Born May 25, 1943 in Meyersdale, PA, Pat carried with her the tenacity and perseverance of those growing up in the tough and tiny neighborhood of Shaw Mines. Pat was married to David Lee Stanton, Sr. for 35 years until his passing in 1995.
Pat displayed a sharp sense of humor and wit that helped her and those around her navigate life’s challenges. Despite her limited interactions with the world outside of Meyersdale, Pat exhibited a rather progressive view, wishing for others to be treated justly and advocating relentlessly for the underdog.
Pat could (and often did) strike up conversations with most anyone. She cherished family time most, hosting Sunday dinners, cheering for the Steelers, and playing endless and competitive card games. To say she was a devoted and caring mother is a vast understatement. Pat loved her children fiercely, including her beloved daughter, Melissa, who she lost to Down Syndrome. It was that love that sparked her devotion to working with children with special needs at Meyersdale Elementary School.
To my dearest Mom: Thank you for loving me. It took becoming a mother myself to fully appreciate your sacrifices and decisions. I am grateful for the space you gave me to become the person I am, allowing me to make mistakes without any criticism or judgement. I will miss your smile, your wit, and of course, your mashed potatoes.
A special thank you to Lisa Hoyman from the bottom of my heart. --MAS
