Nevin Schrock, Jr. Obituary

Nevin Schrock Jr., born in Meyersdale, PA on January 2, 1924, died in Phoenixville, PA in the early morning hours of September 5, 2022 at the age of 98.

Nevin was the son of Nevin Sr. and Ida “Bamie” (Phillippi) Schrock and brother to Esther, Annie, Vendora “Ven”, Edgar, Richard “Dick”, Mary and Susan, Sara, Margaret “Margie”, Ida Mae, James “Jim”, Nelda “Nell”, Jerry and Sanford “Sandy”. To his countless nieces and nephews, he was known as Uncle Gump and was said to have the best legs in the family.

Nevin was married to Dorothy Daugherty and spent his life in Somerset County, PA, mostly in the Meyersdale area as a dairy farmer. Nevin was called to serve in the United States Army as Corporal in the 69 Infantry Division, 272 Infantry Regiment, Headquarters Company in World War II. When asked later in life if he enjoyed camping as recreation, he shared that indeed he did not, having spent enough time “roughing it” in France, Belgium, and Germany.

During his retirement, Nevin and Dorothy enjoyed visits from family, hosting their granddaughters Laurie (Miller) and Carolyn (Wirthlin) during the summer and traveling to the Philadelphia area for holidays. They visited all 50 states, loved to drive and took in all the sights our country had to offer. He loved a good home-cooked meal and would never turn down a slice of pie or piece of fudge. After one too many Meyersdale winters, Nevin and Dorothy became snowbirds, wintering in Lakeland, Florida. Nevin and Dorothy were married for 49 years until Dorothy’s death in June 1993.

Nevin moved to Florida full-time, traveling to visit family in Oregon occasionally and Philadelphia every summer and on holidays. He moved to Royersford, PA to live with his daughter and son-in-law in 2013. In early 2020, he moved into Providence Place Assisted Living in Collegeville, PA where he gained some independence and met new people. He weathered the pandemic and celebrated his 98th birthday with family, shrimp cocktail and his favorite, lemon meringue pie.

Nevin is survived by his sister Margie Brocht; son Michael and his wife Gloria; daughter Michel Indelicato and her husband Alphonso; granddaughters Laurie Miller and husband Michael, and Carolyn Wirthlin and husband Daniel; and great-grandchildren Sophia, Roman, Castle, and Vincent Miller and Charlotte Wirthlin.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Nevin’s name to Providence Place Co-Worker Foundation at 1528 Sand Hill Road Hummelstown, PA 17036 (designate Collegeville Facility) or The American Legion (Post 112) 413 Grant Street Meyersdale, PA 15552.
