M. Ray Leckemby

M. Ray Leckemby, 87, Meyersdale, went to be with the Lord on May 6, 2017. Born in Meyersdale, November 1, 1929 to the late Merle Ray and Martha (Weimer) Leckemby. Survived by his wife of 65 years, Rosetta (Stangarone) Leckemby. Sisters; Mickey Silver and Barbara Shroyer of Florida. Nieces; Teresa Bisset, Rosetta Elaine Forback, and Barbara (Kenny) Steinrich. Nephew, John Stangarone. Great Nephews; Michael (Melinda) Steinrich and Steven (Kim) Steinrich. Great Niece, Margaret Forback. Great-Great Nieces; Johnna Hope and Madison Jo Steinrich. Great-Great Nephew, Wyatt Steinrich. Numerous other nieces and nephews. Special family friends; Doug and Nanette Johnson, Leslie and Joyce Schardt, Louie and Kristen Martin and his best friend, his dog Casper. Ray served in the United States Army, during the Korean War, served on the Peace Train with the war correspondence stationed in Panmunjom, South Korea. Ray was a graduate of the Meyersdale High School Class of 1947. He attended Counter Intelligence School, Fort Holabird in Baltimore, Maryland, Frostburg State Teachers College, Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. Ray was a licensed Minister for the United Church of Christ for 40 years. (Penn West Conference United Church of Christ). He was a member of the Amity United Church of Christ. He served many churches throughout Somerset County, served at Mt. Zion Hay's United Church of Christ for 10 years. Ray was active in Meyersdale Masonic Lodge #554, Royal Chapter, Shriners, and Imperial Chapter. Ray served on many boards over the years;  Meyersdale Municipal Authority, American Legion Post 112, Maple Festival, Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center for 10 years, Chairman for 7 years on the Meyersdale Hospital Board and Seibert Youth Dam. Ray belonged to the PA Funeral Directors Association, Somerset County Funeral Directors Association, lifetime member of the Meyersdale Moose. Ray was the Citizen of the Year in 1977. Ray started working as a very young boy to help his mother, worked at a Sawmill, H.G. Bender, Acme Market, delivered newspapers, FBI, and Price Funeral Home. Ray started the Cub Scouts in Meyersdale and coached “Rotary” baseball. Ray owned a Pool Hall and Ice Cream Parlor in Meyersdale and made wood parts for beds for Veteran's Hospital's. In 1975 he bought the Konhaus Funeral Home and renamed it, M. Ray Leckemby Funeral, the Funeral Home was Ray's life for many years. Ray was a local historian, loved being active and social in his community, was a very giving and generous man. His hobbies were needlepoint, reading, and collecting antiques. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words, and missed beyond measure. Not for himself but for others he lived.......Family and friends will be received  Wednesday from 6-8 PM and  Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8PM at the M. Ray Leckemby Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM at the Amity United Church of Christ with Pastor Connie Garlick and Pastor Keith Grimm officiating.
